Connected Roots, Alliance High School
As we close our 13 weeks of Connected Roots at Alliance High School, we’re reflecting with deep gratitude on the community that was created through this shared experience. What began as a space for creative exploration became something much larger—a place for conversation, reflection, laughter, vulnerability, and connection across generations.
Over the course of the program, families gathered each week to create art, share meals, and spend intentional time together. Through drawing, storytelling, mindfulness, and collaborative activities, participants explored themes of identity, communication, self-care, resilience, and belonging. We witnessed quiet moments of trust, meaningful conversations, and the power of simply making space to be together.
One of the most meaningful parts of Connected Roots was the way the program brought together siblings, mothers, and fathers in interconnected experiences that honored both individuality and family connection. The weekly shared dinners became an extension of the classroom itself—offering time to slow down, connect, and build community beyond the art-making process.
Throughout the 12 weeks, participants showed openness, creativity, and care for one another. Families supported each other’s ideas, shared personal stories, and engaged deeply with the process. It was inspiring to watch relationships strengthen through small but meaningful moments of presence and creativity.
Connected Roots reminded us that art can create openings for reflection, healing, and connection in ways that feel approachable and human. Creativity gave participants a language to express experiences that are not always easy to put into words, while also creating opportunities for joy, curiosity, and shared understanding.
We are deeply grateful to our collaborators and partners who helped make this experience possible. Thank you to Project Fatherhood for your partnership and commitment to strengthening family connections and community care. We also want to thank the Creative Wellbeing initiative and the many organizations supporting this work, including the Los Angeles County Department of Arts and Culture, Office of Child Protection, Department of Mental Health, Department of Children and Family Services, Department of Justice, Care and Opportunities, and the Arts for Healing and Justice Network through the LA County Arts Education Collective. Your shared vision and collaboration continue to create meaningful opportunities for healing, creativity, and belonging through the arts.
Upward Together is honored to have been part of this journey. The conversations, artwork, and connections built over these past months will stay with us long after the final session. While this chapter is coming to a close, the intention behind Connected Roots continues: creating spaces where people feel seen, supported, creative, and connected—together.
