Painting for Calm: How Art Helps Students Find Their Flow
At Torch Middle School, students recently participated in a “Painting for Calm” workshop led by Upward Together, which combines mindfulness, creativity, and self-expression. The classroom transformed into a peaceful studio as students explored Expressionist art and learned about the vibrant brushwork of Vincent van Gogh — from swirling skies to glowing sunflowers.
Students discussed how colors can convey emotions and how art can influence our mood. Using simple watercolor palettes, they began painting their own scenes inspired by calm waves, sunsets, and gardens — while learning to slow down, breathe deeply, and trust the creative process.
More than just an art class, Painting for Calm encourages emotional regulation and focus through hands-on learning. Students discovered that each brushstroke can release tension and that creativity can be a powerful mental health tool.
Upward Together’s workshops help schools integrate mindfulness and art to support social-emotional learning (SEL), reduce stress, and foster self-awareness. Through programs like this, students gain lifelong tools for confidence, empathy, and calm connection.
