The Expression Lab at Pasadena City College: A Healing Space for Creative Calm

On Saturday, September 14, Upward Together had the joy of hosting an event at The Expression Lab at Pasadena City College, as part of a powerful day of community care and mental health awareness.

This open art activation invited participants—ranging from students to community members—to slow down and reconnect with themselves through creative self-expression. Using oil pastels and round watercolor paper, we created a calming, judgment-free zone where people could reflect, express, and regulate through art.

Over the course of the day, dozens of participants came through the Expression Lab to color, breathe, and decompress—some staying for just a few minutes, others for nearly an hour. The space was designed to be soft, approachable, and supportive—no art experience required.

Why The Expression Lab Matters:
In moments when language feels too heavy or emotions are hard to name, art offers another way through. The Expression Lab is rooted in the belief that everyone deserves access to healing, not just in clinical spaces, but in creative ones.

We’re grateful to the Arts for Healing and Justice Network and LA County Department of Arts and Culture for inviting us to co-create this meaningful experience for the Pasadena community.
