Watercolor Class with Upward Together at Torch Middle School

This week, Torch Middle School came alive with color as students participated in a watercolor painting workshop led by Upward Together. The classroom buzzed with creativity as young artists learned foundational watercolor techniques—like flat washes, graded washes, scrumbling, and feathering—before diving into their own expressive landscape paintings.

With paint palettes, brushes, and plenty of imagination, students explored how art can be both calming and empowering. They experimented with blending colors to capture sunsets, rolling hills, and skies full of movement. More than just a lesson in technique, the workshop encouraged students to slow down, notice details, and find joy in the process.

At Upward Together, we believe art is more than self-expression—it’s a tool for mindfulness and emotional wellness. Studies show that creative activities like watercolor painting reduce stress, improve focus, and boost confidence. By offering hands-on workshops in schools, we create opportunities for students to connect with themselves, their peers, and their inner calm.

The smiles on the students’ faces at Torch Middle School said it all. Each painting became a personal reflection of mood, energy, and discovery.

We’re proud to bring programs like this to schools across Los Angeles, inspiring the next generation through art and mindfulness.
